A new study sponsored by Nasa's Goddard Space Flight Center
has highlighted the prospect that global industrial civilisation could collapse
in coming decades due to unsustainable resource exploitation and increasingly
unequal wealth distribution.
By investigating the human-nature dynamics of these past
cases of collapse, the project identifies the most salient interrelated factors
which explain civilisational decline, and which may help determine the risk of
collapse today: namely, Population, Climate, Water, Agriculture, and Energy.
These factors can lead to collapse when they converge to
generate two crucial social features: "the stretching of resources due to
the strain placed on the ecological carrying capacity"; and "the
economic stratification of society into Elites [rich] and Masses (or
"Commoners") [poor]" These social phenomena have played "a
central role in the character or in the process of the collapse," in all
such cases over "the last five thousand years."
Currently, high levels of economic stratification are linked
directly to overconsumption of resources, with "Elites" based largely
in industrialised countries responsible for both:
"... accumulated surplus is not evenly distributed
throughout society, but rather has been controlled by an elite. The mass of the
population, while producing the wealth, is only allocated a small portion of it
by elites, usually at or just above subsistence levels."
The two key solutions are to reduce economic inequality so
as to ensure fairer distribution of resources, and to dramatically reduce
resource consumption by relying on less intensive renewable resources and
reducing population growth:
"Collapse can be avoided and population can reach
equilibrium if the per capita rate of depletion of nature is reduced to a
sustainable level, and if resources are distributed in a reasonably equitable
fashion."

1.Why do the researchers fear that modern industrial society could be heading for a collapse?
ReplyDeleteResearchers fear that the modern industrial society could collapse because researchers studied other collapses in history and discovered some common factors that can cause a collapse, which are happening currently. The causes are, the dispersal of money not being equal and the over usage of resources.
2. What would Thomas Malthus or Karl Marx say about this article? Would they agree or disagree? Why? Would solutions would they propose?
Thomas Malthus would probably say that he was expecting this to happen. Thomas Malthus would agree with this article because of his theory about population. The theory is about there not being enough food to support the growing population. The solutions that he would propose are for the government not to help people who cannot afford to buy food and for families to have less kids. Karl Marx would probably say that he is not surprised. He would agree with this article because Karl Marx thought that the system that is unsafe and not stable is Capitalism. He believed this because he believed that Capitalism makes some people rich and most people poor. The solution he would propose is to get rid of Capitalism and set up Communism.

Researchers believe that modern industrial society today is heading for a collapse because of the accumulated surplus of resources is not being distributed evenly. In which our society will not succeed and therefore will decrease in resources, of ecological and economical factors. For the only success our society must reduce our use of resources as well as share our consumption evenly.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion I believe Thomas Malthus would agree with these researcher beliefs and opinions. Malthus would agree because he believe that there isn't enough for food for a civilization to go around, as well as there is so much poverty and so much downfall. In which our society doesn't share equally enough for us to succeed throughout life for decades to come. He would most likely propose that the government makes sure of sharing equally, with major consequences if not obeyed.

1. Q: Why do the researchers fear that modern industrial society could be heading for a collapse?
ReplyDeleteA: They fear this because of the overuse of resources and the increasingly unequal wealth distribution (big inequality between the rich and the poor).
2. Q: What would Thomas Malthus or Karl Marx say about this article? Would they agree or disagree? Why? Would solutions would they propose?
A: Thomas Malthus would say that the population being too big and the overuse of resources for them are causing this. He would agree because he says that the population is so big that it creates problems with resources by the overuse of them to support this large population. His solution would be to stop having so many children and the government to stop supporting this large population. Karl Marx would say that there is too much inequality between the rich and the poor and the handling of money between them. He would agree because he says that there is too much inequality between social classes. His solution would be to make the poor revolt and to overthrow the rich in order to have equality.

1.Why do the researchers fear that modern industrial society could be heading for a collapse? Researchers fear that modern industrial society will collapse because people are over using technology and other resources and wealth is spread unevenly between all of the classes.
ReplyDelete2. What would Thomas Malthus or Karl Marx say about this article? Would they agree or disagree? Why? Would solutions would they propose?
Tomas Malthus would agree with this article. His theory was that there would eventually not be enough resources for everyone due to overpopulation. Also, there is so much poverty because the wealth is not distributed equally so then future generations will not have enough money to live and therefore not enough resources (money) for everybody.

Q:Why do the researchers fear that modern industrial society could be heading for a collapse?
ReplyDeleteA: The researchers have these fears because two problems are occurring. The first, is the unequal distribution of resources. The second, is the overuse of the previously noted natural resources. These two problems will lead to the human race finally running out of resources to use.
Q:What would Thomas Malthus or Karl Marx say about this article? Would they agree or disagree? Why? Would solutions would they propose?
A: Thomas Malthus would agree with and restate all the researchers' findings to prove his own ideas. He would say the unequal distribution of dwindling resources would ultimately lead to the destruction of humanity. Both Malthus and Marx would agree fully with each other. The would pose two solutions identical to the researchers' solutions. The resources need to be distributed equally, and fewer resources, if not renewable, should be used.

Question:Why do the researchers fear that modern industrial society could be heading for a collapse?

Question:What would Thomas Malthus or Karl Marx say about this article? Would they agree or disagree? Why? Would solutions would they propose?
Thomas Malthus would agree with this article. This is because he was very interested in demographics. One of his big ideas was that population increases faster than the supply of goods available for its needs. Malthus would say that this article is accurate. Malthus would suggest that people marry late, using contraceptives, emigrating, or decreasing health care.

Researchers fear that the modern industrial society is heading for a collapse. This is because; people are overusing and abusing the climate, water, agriculture, and energy resources. All of these resources are vital for a sustainable civilization. There are two major “strains” to date: resources and economics. High levels of economic stratification are directly linked to the uneven distribution between social classes. The minority group, the upper richer class, is controlling this economic inequality and the mass of the population is producing most of this wealth. Resources between groups need to reach equilibrium and decrease the amount of resources being used.
ReplyDeleteKarl Marx would simply say, “My opinions and theories have ultimately lead up to this devastation”. This is due to the fact the Karl Marxs stated that the society’s conflicts are characterized by the rich and the poor, which is clearly going on today. The uneven distribution of wealth is clearly seen between the two groups. Marx would most likely propose the solution of Marxism. Marxism is the system of economic and politics. Additionally, Marx believed in a classless society. This would just ultimately be even distribution to all receivers.

1. Why do the researchers fear that modern industrial society could be heading for a collapse?
ReplyDeleteResearches fear for a collapse because we are using too many resources as a whole. They also said that the separation of rich and poor could also lead to a collapse.
2. What would Thomas Malthus or Karl Marx say about this article? Would they agree or disagree? Why? Would solutions would they propose?
Thomas Malthus would be proven right when he said that the decrease of food and resources will lead to the decrease of population. He would say that he was right all along. He would agree because the article states that the human population would collapse which was exactly what Malthus believed. Malthus would just let it go on. When wars started over inequality of wealth, he would believe that it was just a natural occurrence in society. He also might want a law for a limit of children in each household to be put into effect.

1) Researchers believe that the modern industrial society is leading to collapse because of unequal wealth and there is misuse of resources. These resources can eventually become extinct.
ReplyDelete2) Thomas Malthus would agree with this article because he believes that social classes should not exist and everyone should be equal in wealth. Also, he believes that the resources should be split equally among everyone.

Many professionals are scared that the modern industrialization age is heading for a collapse in the upcoming years. After getting out of a recession a mere couple years ago, the problem seems to be reoccurring, but with a different cause and effect. The overuse of resources is becoming prominent, while economic stress is quite present. These strains are taking a toll on our modern society. The resources are running short of supply and cannot fulfill the demand being wanted, while satisfying everyone equally. This causes an inequality between nations, as some are using more than others. The economic stress is caused and exaggerated by the uneven distribution of wealth between the classes. The gap between the lower and upper classes is very large, and the upper class obtains most of America's wealth during this time. These strains are leading to a need for an equal economic system between the classes and an awareness of the saving of resources.
ReplyDeleteThomas Malthus would agree with this worry because he had his own theories about this same issue happening. He believed that population grew faster then we could produce food. A version of that idea is happening now with the depleting resources and the economic strain between the classes. He did predict this situation years ago, where the population would outgrow the resources available, and the nation would fall into a recession.

1. Q: Why do the researchers fear that modern industrial society could be heading for a collapse?
ReplyDeleteA: Researchers feel that modern industrial society will be heading for a collapse because the rich will keep getting richer and the poor will keep getting poorer, which will result in the rich people amassing surplus resources and the poor the poor people won't have the money to purchase necessary resources.
2. Q: What would Thomas Malthus or Karl Marx say about this article? Would they agree or disagree? Why? What solutions would they propose?
A: Thomas Malthus would say that the article is accurate. He said that the population rate increases faster than the food supply can be produced to support everyone. So given that the article states that "The two key solutions are to reduce economic inequality so as to ensure fairer distribution of resources, and to dramatically reduce resource consumption by relying on less intensive renewable resources and reducing population growth," he would agree because he believed limiting the population was necessary. Malthus' solution might be that people with a low IQ should be sterilized because the less intelligent tend to reproduce more. If they are sterilized then they cannot reproduce and society will avoid collapse, because then there will be enough resources.

1. Why do the researchers fear that modern industrial society could be heading for a collapse?
ReplyDeleteResearchers fear the modern industrial society could collapse because some aspects that they observed in modern society have also been aspects of societies that previously collapsed. These include over usage of resources that we need, as well as the unequal distribution of money.
2. What would Thomas Malthus or Karl Marx say about this article? Would they agree or disagree? Why? What solutions would they propose?
Thomas Malthus would state that the over usage of resources is exactly what he predicted when he stated that the production, particularly in food, was not going to be able to keep up with the increases in population. He would definitely agree that society was soon going to collapse, considering he predicted it would have much sooner. He would probably recommend keeping the populations low, restricting the amount of children you can have and maybe rationing food.

Researchers fear that modern industrial society could be heading for a collapse. They believe this because; our huge population is overusing the agriculture, water, climate, and energy. Resources are beginning to run low, and the social standings between the rich and the poor are getting out of hand.
ReplyDeleteThomas Mathus would agree with this article. He believes that population growth increases faster than our ability to produce more food. He believed that people should fend for themselves. He is on the right side of the political spectrum. To solve this problem he would probably, if he was alive during this time, get rid of food stamps and insurance.

1. Researchers fear that industrialized societies will collapse because of an exploitation of resources, and an uneven redistribution of wealth. They have concluded this because history has shown that this has happened in all industrialized cities over the past five thousand years. This has happened because the lack of resources has been unable to keep the industrial cities industrialized, and the people will not accept inequality.
ReplyDelete2. If Thomas Malthus were here to see this today he would be outraged that people are still continuing to exploit their resources, but he would agree with NASA’s some of the solutions. If he were here he would propose less government influence on the situation, and to regulate the population extremely.
If Karl Marx were here, he would be displeased with how much inequality “rich and poor” there is. If he heard this he would disagree with the solutions, and say that the poor should kill, lie, and steal until they are in control of the city.

1. Researchers fear that our modern society could collapse in the coming decades because we are depleting our natural resources too fast, and the wealth gained by people in our society is mainly controlled by "elites" (the rich), and it is not distributed properly throughout the "masses" (everyone else).
ReplyDelete2. Thomas Malthus would agree with these researchers, because he predicted that we would eventually run out of natural resources. His solution would probably be to have way less children, so overtime we use less and less resources. Karl Marx would also agree with this, because he believed wealth should be distributed evenly between the rich and the poor. His solution would probably be to change most if not all of the governments in the world to a communist system that guarantees that every citizen receives the same amount of income by distributing all wealth brought in to the nation evenly.

The main reasons why researchers believe that modern industrial society may be headed towards a collapse are overused resources and social classes. They think we use too many of our resources and soon enough we will not be able to support the population and they also believe that the way we split up citizens into high, middle and low classes contribute to the downfall as well.

Thomas Malthus would say that the population grows faster than food production, thus leading to issues such as famine and disease. This surplus population decrease would, in his opinion, help repair modern industrial society.

Why do the researchers fear that modern industrial society could be heading for a collapse? Primarily researchers believe there will be a collapse in the future because of the overuse and exploitation of natural resources as well as the unequal wealth distribution. In addition research to previous collapses in history show common factors between the society then and now.
ReplyDeleteWhat would Thomas Malthus or Karl Marx say about this article? Would they agree or disagree? Why? Would solutions would they propose?
Thomas Malthus would agree with this because he had hypothesized that there would be overpopulation at one point for humans and that this overpopulation would cause a shortage of food. Karl Marx had believed that equal wealth distribution and the rise of the poor would help societies advance and his ideas took the form of communism which drove many nations into disasters. People believed that communism wasn't the way to go, but now researchers are saying that a step towards equal wealth distribution needs to be taken and so it draws attention again to Marx's ideas. Malthus would suggest to put a large amount of supervision on population growth and create rules and regulations which will control the population. Marx on the other hand would propose that the poor class rise up and take part in the wealth that is being distributed unevenly.

Thomas Malthus would say that the over population is the cause of these problems. He would also agree that there is a possible collapse in the near future. The overpopulation that we have in our countries is the initial cause. He could propose limiting the amount of children that people have along with the thought of lessening the amount of health care and doctors to increase the death rate to even out the overpopulation.

Q1: Why do the researchers fear that modern industrial society could be heading for a collapse?
ReplyDeleteA: It is because the modern industrial society created these two problems, both of which can most probably lead to collapse. Because of how the resources were distributed back when America was industrialized, the middle class, or the elite, would own almost all of it and the working class, or the masses, would only own a small portion of the money and resources. Also, because of how our population has increased so much lately, we are using too many resources, and it is starting to run short. These two problems can ultimately lead to collapse, as said before.
Q2: What would Thomas Malthus or Karl Marx say about this article? Would they agree or disagree? Why? Would solutions would they propose?
A: Thomas Malthus would say that because the population is so big, our resources can not keep up with the increase of the rate of population growth, just as he said long time back. He would agree to this study because he was the one who said that the population will eventually grow more than the amount of resources and that this would cause the population to decrease after this event, and his solution would be to stop the population from growing to fast and to limit it so that the resources can be consumed less. Karl Marx would say that the middle class is overpowering the working class and is taking all of the resources for themselves. He would also say that the working class should rebel against the middle class so it can also benefit from those resources. He would agree because of the amount of inequality in our country and because the elites are taking most of the resources for themselves rather than giving some of them to the masses. His solution would be for the working class to revolt and rebel against the middle class so that equality among the different classes can be gained.

1. Researchers feared that modern industrial societies will collapse because they are using too many resources. As well as an uneven distribution of resources between the rich and poor.
ReplyDelete2. Thomas Malthus would agree with the researchers. For he thought that food production would not catch up to the rise in population. To solve the problem he would have the government evenly distribute food throughout the people, thus causing a Communism society.

1. Why do the researchers fear that modern industrial society could be heading for a collapse?
ReplyDeleteResearchers feel that modern industrial society could be heading for a collapse because of inadequate or dangerous population levels, climate, water, agriculture, and energy, in addition to social structure (the separation of the the rich from the poor). The growing population has resulted in depletion of resources needed for industry such as fossil fuels. Also, there has been a class separation that has developed. The division has resulted in unequal sharing of profits and unequal salary distribution as well, since many industries are owned by the "elite" or richer people.
2. What would Thomas Malthus or Karl Marx say about this article? Would they agree or disagree? Why? Would solutions would they propose?
Thomas Malthus of Karl Marx would say that the article is correct about the problems mentioned in this article and agree with the author's stance. This is because the article stresses, "sharing the resources", even stating, "collapse can be avoided and population can reach equilibrium if the per capita rate of depletion of nature is reduced to a sustainable level, and if resources are distributed in a reasonably equitable fashion." This quote means that if resources are equally distributed, as Marx believes in his theories of communism, then industry and quality of life will be improved. Malthus would also agree with this article because it mentions that the population should be controlled and regulated, as he believed should happen and as he wrote in "An Essay on the Principle of Population". All in all, both figures would agree that wealth and work should be distributed equally in addition to population regulation in society.

Why do the researchers fear that modern industrial society could be heading for a collapse?
ReplyDeleteResearchers fear that modern industrial society could be heading for a collapse because the vast majority of the population does not control the resources. The small wealthy portion of the economy controls resources, which frightens researchers because they think that it will cause the resources to be stretched. The surplus is controlled by the elite and not distributed among the masses.
What would Thomas Malthus or Karl Marx say about this article? Would they agree or disagree? Why? Would solutions would they propose?
Thomas Malthus would think this article was irrelevant because he believed that the world could not support its population anyway, and would reach its limit, calling for famine and disease to wipe out large masses of people. He would disagree with spreading the surplus around, because he was against charity and outside help. He would propose to leave it as it is, because in the long term charity would hurt the poor. He would also be in support of making the mortality rate closer to the rate of birth and decreasing the population so the Earth could better support it.

Why do researchers fear that modern industrial society could be heading of a collapse?
ReplyDeleteResearchers are worried about social collapse because there is such a wide gap between the rich and poor. The wider the gap gets, the harder it is for the poor to cross over it into the rich. These researchers are looking at past events where limiting factors caused the industry society to collapse because only a few people could afford these resources.
What would Thomas Malthus or Karl Marx say about this article? Would they agree or disagree? Why? Would solutions would they propose?
Karl Marx would have agreed with these researchers because he believed the middle class or the rich had all the power and that is what the article said.. He believed that the rich and poor would despise each other and he thought that the poor would rise up and take control of that power. Marx did not think of any solution other than, "overthrow the middle class".

1.Why do the researchers fear that modern industrial society could be heading for a collapse?
ReplyDeleteThe researchers from the program sponsored by Nasa’s Goddard Space Flight Center fear that modern industrial society could by headed for a collapse because, the looked closer into the different possible categories: Population, Climate, Water, Agriculture, and Energy. Based on two converging social features of the ecological carrying capacity and the economic “unbalance” between the rich and the poor, these are the factors that are the central focus factors that could cause the collapse in cases ranging from over the last five thousand years.
2.) What would Thomas Malthus or Karl Marx say about this article? Would they agree or disagree? Why? Would solutions would they propose?
I believe that Malthus would look at these two problems and make sure that the government played a little role in helping out. I also believe he would strongly disagree because of his research of population and food comparisons. He would probably propose that even if the extra population needs food or money, that things such as: war, disease, and famine could get rid of them. Malthus wouldn’t want the government giving out all their extra “charity to these people” and would rely on his geometric system of determining food vs. population to see what the population would be at and let the problem work itself out. I think Marx would agree with the problems that are being talked about due to his beliefs in Marxism. He would say that by working harder and giving up material things, as the workers need to save ourselves. The only way of improving the situation within the ecological problems would be to start with the economic ones. The class struggle needed to start by working to get the world to where it needs to be.

1. Researchers fear the modern industrial society could be heading for a collapse because of unsustainable resource exploitation and increasing inequality of wealth distribution.
ReplyDelete2. Thomas Malthus would agree with this article because of his theory on population growth. There would not be enough resources to go around for the whole population. Also, the wealth not being equally distributed is probably due to overpopulation as well. His solution to the issue would probably be to gradually lessen the reproduction rate.

1. Why do the researchers fear that modern industrial society could be heading for a collapse?
ReplyDeleteResearchers fear that modern industrial society could be heading for a collapse because of the increasingly unequal wealth distribution and unsustainable resource exploitation.
2. What would Thomas Malthus or Karl Marx say about this article? Would they agree or disagree? Why? Would solutions would they propose?
Both Thomas Malthus and Karl Marx would agree with this article. Thomas Malthus believed that the rate of the population/birthrate increased quicker than the time to produce food. Karl Marx would agree because he thinks it is fair for everyone to have an equal opportunity at wealth.
